The Ford F-150 Lightning is one of the top electric trucks available on the market right now and for many good reasons. Even the standard sub-model features a range of over 200 miles, an impressive feat for a large electric vehicle. With similar payload and towing maximums to the standard F-150, the Lightning is one of the best options for an EV truck. But the driving range is where the F-150 Lightning shines compared to many other large EV vehicles.

WHAT'S NEW FOR THE 2023 FORD LIGHTNING?

The differences between the 2022 and 2023 Ford Lightning models are slim, with the main difference being a jump in price. As with many items in today's market, this is primarily due to supply chain issues and rising material costs. The demand for the Lightning has also increased recently, contributing to the final price.

In addition to price increases, the Ford Lightning also got a range increase this year. The standard range in the 2023 model is now 240, up 10 miles from last year's model. Other changes include adding the Pro Trailer Hitch Assist feature and two new color options, Azure Gray and Avalanche Gray. However, it is worth noting that Smoked Quartz Metallic, Atlas Blue, and Ice Blue Silver color options will no longer be offered on the 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning.

LIGHTNING EV MOTOR, POWER, AND PERFORMANCE

All Ford F-150 Lightning models come standard with two electric motors and all-wheel drive. In the standard range model, these two motors produce 452 horsepower. With the Extended-Range battery, the horsepower rating rises to 580; peak torque is an impressive 775 pound-feet with either setup.

As with many electric vehicle models, the Lightning features incredible acceleration, reaching 60 mph in just 4 seconds, and is capable of a 12.7-second quarter mile at 107 mph. Additionally, the Lightning features smooth handling thanks to its low center of gravity.

FORD LIGHTNING RANGE, CHARGING, AND BATTERY LIFE

While the standard model features a smaller battery and a 240-mile range, upgrading to the larger 131.0-kWh pack boosts the driving range to 320 miles. For charging at home, owners of the Ford Lightning can charge using 110- and 220-volt outlets. For faster charging, drivers can plug in at public DC fast-charging stations. The Lightning can charge from 15% to 80% in just 44 minutes at public charging stations. The F-150 Lightning can also work as a backup generator at home or abroad, providing up to three days of electricity for the average household in case of a power outage.

FUEL ECONOMY AND REAL-WORLD MPGE

The EPA has rated the F-150 Lightning Standard-Range models at 76 MPGe city and 61 MPGe highway. The Extended-Range features up to 78 MPGe city and 63 MPGe highway. As with all EVs, the Lightning can use energy more efficiently by converting 77% of its energy to power the wheels, compared to just 12-30% of energy traditional gas vehicles are capable of using to power the wheels, according to the EPA.
